Tempelhof airport is a symbol for liberty and stands for the unity of the entire population in Germany. Without Tempelhof airport the Soviet Union would have been successful in starving the people during the blockade of West-Berlin from June 1948 until May 1949.
Only the airlift of food and other vital goods conducted by the U.S. Air Force saved the city. At that time the people of Berlin proved to be steadfast in defending their democracy, and America proved to be a strong and reliable ally In all the years of the cold war West Berlin was an outpost of the free world, until finally the regime in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) was overcome by its own people. The love of freedom and will to change of the East Germans on demonstrations in many cities of the former GDR proved, how successful a people can peacefully make change happen.
LET US NOT STOP! WE CONTINUE IN THIS SPIRIT. AGAIN WE MAKE A PIECE OF BERLIN HISTORY!!
YOUR HELP IS NEEDED TOO!
SUPPORT TEMPELHOF AIRPORT
The efforts to destroy the this histocally significant and yet still usefull airport are just the political will of the senate. The closure of the airport would not only harm the Berlin economics, but in particular the middle class and those employees still working at Tempelhof airport.
The governing mayor of Berlin Klaus Wowereit however says in his speech at Feb. 28. 2008 in the Lower House of Berlin:
""for my decision to close Tempelhof airport any referendum is irrelevant!"
That means the outcome of the referendum will be just ignored by a democratically elected representative of the people.
DThe governing mayor of Berlin Klaus Wowereit and his government comrades no longer exercise their power in the interest of the Berlin citizens. The Lower House of Berlin is being abused, it does not represent the people any more.
""after the Social Democrats only smiled at the referendum
condescendingly and underestimated it for months, Wowereit is now fighting for the closure
of the airport - and for remaining in power, if necessary also against the will of hundreds
of thousands (of citizens)."."
